Waving Somebody Ahead
How to let another car go ahead of you at a stop sign or in a parking lot.
March 4, 2009
Recently, I was in a parking lot and waiting at the end of a row for a car to pass before I pulled out. The car was moving very slowly and I nearly thought, "This guy is going so slow that I should just pull out ahead of him." However, that could have caused a wreck if they had decided to speed up suddenly or at least been rude.
So, I waited and eventually I noticed something moving inside the car. Now, I should set the scene a bit more. It was just passed dusk so it was dark in the parking lot and the parking lot lights were reflecting off of the windshield of the car making it hard to see inside the car. Also, our headlights were on so I had their headlight shining on me as well.
I figured that they were attempting to wave me out ahead of them and so I pulled out of the lane ahead of them. They eventually turned up the lane I was coming out of, but I should note that there was plenty of space for them to turn up the lane with me in it as I was off to the right as I should have been.
Basically, you shouldn't sit in your car frantically waving somebody out, especially at night as they can't see you swatting flies in the car.
What should you do at any time of the day is not think somebody can see into your car, but flash your high beams a couple times to alert the driver of the other car that you are allowing them to pull out ahead of you.
Now, as the driver of the car being allowed to pull out ahead, make sure your path is not blocked or going to be blocked by another car. Just because one car is allowing you to go first, you are probably out of turn and may be pulling into another vehicle's right of way and you would be at fault for the accident if a third car and you hit each other.
Technically, the car that granted you access to pull out is at fault, but they may not know this and will probably leave the scene of the accident. This will make you look like a fool telling the police officer investigating the accident you had with the third car that somebody waved you out of the lane.
