The first two went to NASCAR owner, Rick Hendrick, who bought the rights to the first two off the line at the recent Barrett-Jackson auto auction in Scottsdale, AZ. Hendrick paid $350,000, which went to the American Heart Association, which gave him the rights to the first Camaro off the line and GM threw in VIN number 2 as part of the deal.
Hendrick also owns a GM dealerships and was present in Oshawa, Ontario GM Assembly Plant building the cars, as the cars came off the line. Hendrick drove VIN number 1 off the line.
If you are waiting for one of the 14,000 you've already bought, they say that early in production they will be building 80 a day, which will pick up to 440 a day.
"It's a great first day of production here at Oshawa," said Dan Hermer, the Oshawa car plant manager. "It's great to have Rick Hendrick and all of his team here with us to kick off Day 1 [March 16, 2009] of the 2010 Camaro. A great day for all the employees here, and a great day for General Motors. This is just a beautiful high-performance product that I'm sure is going to do quite outstanding in the marketplace."
Hendrick told the assembly plant workers, "There's only one problem, I can't drive 'em home."
He continued, "I want to tell you loud and clear that these products that you are building today are the best I've ever seen in the 33 years I've been a dealer. We needed the rebirth of the Camaro."
