Automotive Advancements:
President Obama Compares the Model T to a SUV
March 22, 2009

On Thursday, March 19, 2009, President Obama spoke at the Edison Electric Vehicle Technical Center in Pomona, Calif. and he made a comparison in a failed attempt to provide evidence to back up his endorsement of electric vehicles.

Twice in his comparison he told us, "think about this" so I did. Let's look at what I came up with during my thinking.

First, we'll take a look at what he wants us to "think about." Obama said, "The 1908 Model T -- think about this -- the 1908 Model T earned better gas mileage than the typical SUV in 2008. Think about that -- a hundred years later and we're getting less gas mileage, not better, on SUVs."

Now, I thought about it and came up with "Duh! I'd expect that to be true." If Bill Engvall was commenting on that quote he'd probably say, "Here's your sign!" Here's why I came up with those thoughts.

The first thing I thought was what kind of a comparison is that. Sure, on the first glance it sounds bad, but when you actually do think about it, as President Obama asked me to do, it makes me wonder about whether Obama actually thought about it.

Let's look at the facts.

The 1908 Model T Specifications

Engine(s) 177 cu. in. (2.9 L)
20 horsepower
Transmission(s) 2-speed planetary gear
3-speed planetary gear

The 2008 Ford Explorer Specifications

Engine: 4.6-liter V8 engine
292 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque
Length: 193.4 in.
Width: 73.7 in.
Height: 72.8 in.
Wheel Base: 113.7 in.
Ground Clearance: 8.2 in.
Curb Weight: 4436 lbs.
Gross Weight: 5956 lbs.
The Differences in the Specifications

Engine: 1.7-liter V8 engine
272 horsepower
Curb Weight: 3236 lbs.

In 100 years we've come a long way with transportation and believe me we don't want to go back. First, the seating capacity for a Model T was much less than a SUV and the safety enhancements to vehicles is much better to protect those passengers as well as the ride quality. Can you imagine taking the family to Grandmom's today in a Model T? It would probably take two trips if you didn't have your SUV and also you'd have to risk your life more than twice as much because it would take twice as long to get there and back again.

We are in a microwave style of life nowadays and if we had to travel at the top speed of a Model T with 20 horsepower nobody would like that. The 2008 Ford Explorer SUV has 272 more horsepower and it is needed to carry the 3,236 pounds of extra weight that is required to carry the extra passengers and safety enhancements.

Finally, in our brief first thoughts on the matter you need a stronger engine to move that extra weight and move it at an acceptable speed for today's needs.

Conclusion. No sh...cow chips President Obama! More power takes more gas and without more power you can't provide the conveniences of today's needs. What's your solution Mr. President? Go back 100 years? You do realize that 100 years ago you'd have been a servant working for people and not have a shot at being the President of the United States. We've come a long way in the past 100 years and going back is not something we'll be doing anytime soon.
