NASCAR Rule Changes:
Double File Restarts to Start at Pocono?
June 3, 2009

Will we have double file restarts at Pocono for the Cup Series? It seems like that is the plan as the cat was let out of the bag on Speed's "This Week In NASCAR" show. It sounded like they weren't supposed to say anything about it, but Michael Waltrip couldn't keep his mouth shut and let the cat out of the bag.

There is no official word yet from NASCAR to the fans, but then in the past they haven't made new rules known before they need to apply them to an actual race situation. Then, the broadcast crew doesn't usually know how to explain what happened so they guess and NASCAR usually does something different than what is said. Plus, the fans in the seats have no clue what they just saw or why what happened after it happened.

Below is the transcript of what was said on "This Week In NASCAR."

Michael Waltrip — "Get ready for some fun hopefully this weekend at Pocono we're going to double things up."

Steve Byrnes — "Double file restarts."

Chad Knaus — "Is that official? I don't think you can talk."

Steve Byrnes — "Didn't"

Chad Knaus — "Shhhh!"

Steve Byrnes — "They handed stuff out to you guys at the drives meeting did they not?"

Chad Knaus — "I don't think we're supposed to talk about it yet."

Steve Byrnes — "Uh oh!"

Michael Waltrip — "I just want you to know, it's going to be cool though."

Steve Byrnes — "We just walked down the double file restart path, didn't we?"

Michael Waltrip — "Whenever that happens it is going to be fun."

Steve Byrnes — "This weekend. Maybe."

End Transcrip.

As or if news is released about the allegedly pending new restart procedure we will pass along what we learn.

Some interesting questions about it are what do they do with the lapped cars? Will they start in back double file? If so, there will not be any chance of lapped cars racing their way back onto the lead lap or cars more than one lap down having any shot of getting back to one lap down to get the "Lucky Dog" to return to the lead lap. So, will the "Lucky Dog" rule be expanded to include a second "Lucky Dog" going to the first car two laps down if applicable?

Another question is what happens if a car one lap down stays on the track during a caution and all of the lead lap cars pit during the caution. The lapped car basically moves onto the lead lap as that car will be ahead of the leader, but will they restart at the front of the pack? What if there are quite a few cars a lap down that return to the tail end of the lead lap as they stay on the track during a caution and the lead lap cars pit?

These are just two of the scenarios that need to be addressed if they change the restart procedures. So, if Pocono is the place to change things, it would be nice to know what is going to happen before the weekend gets here.
